Future Plans and Financial Requirements
The last few years have witnessed a remarkable improvement in the city of Ludhiana. Wide metal led roads, modern street light system and beautified city entry points have imparted the look of a modern city to Ludhiana. However, because of the high growth rate of the city, both physically and demographically, 100% coverage of civic amentities is a challenge to the local body. It is a challenge to the local body. It is estimated that funds to the tune of Rs 1700 crore, is required for achieving the above. The water supply and sewerage system alone requires Rs. 674 crore. The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, is now looking at commercial viability of projects. This requires a careful analysis of municipal investment capacity within a broad urban finance framework, identifiable revenue streams and adequate returns on investments. This new approach to providing the infrastructure and services is likely to enable the local body to respond more effectively to the greatest needs that of increasing access to services and improving service levels particularly among the most disadvantages.
