Municipal Corporation came into existence in 1978. First time elections of Municipal Corporation Ldh. were held in year 1992. And Chaudhary Sat Parkash  was elected as first Mayor of M.C. Ldh, S. Surjit  Singh Ahluwalia became the senior deputy mayor. Total number of members of house was 50. Two other cities of Punjab namely Jalandhar and Amritsar were also granted the status of corporation. 
With the increase in population and territorial area of Ludhiana city the strength of house was increased to 70, plus five MLA members and budget of Municipal Corporation has crossed Rupees 338 crores, which was only Rupess 50 lacs in 1970.
